VSS_WAIT Async operation for 'GatherWriterMetadata' timed out

I am running Acrosync on a Windows 2012 R2 server. I have been running it for almost 2 years. It is running as a service and runs two jobs a day. It uses the administrator account and not the system local account. Looking at the logs recently  I noticed the following errors in both jobs:

VSS_WAIT Async operation for 'GatherWriterMetadata' timed out

RSYNC_VSS Failed to create a shadow copy of 'D:' -- continue without VSS

The jobs work but I can't tell you when it started. It could have been a few days ago, a few weeks ago, or a few months ago.

Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks

  • Forgot to mention that I am running Acrosync version 1.6 build 573.
  • If you download the latest build 582 you'll be able to increase the timeout from the default 30 seconds by creating a registry value HKCU/Software/Acrosync/AcrosyncClient/ShadowCopyTimeout with any value you want in seconds.
  • What kind of value should it be? String? Binary? DWORD? QWORD? etc?
  • After I downloaded build 582 (64 bit) Vipre quarantined it with a virus (Variant.Graftor.416553).

  • I'm pretty sure this is a false alarm.  Virustotal.com shows it is being detected by several other engines as the same virus but not Vipre:

The registry value should be DWORD but if you create it as a string it should work too.
  • Vipre also quarantined build 573 which I had saved. A recent virus signature update must be flagging them. I sent 582 to Vipre to look at as a false positive. I'll install 582 and change the timeout to 60 seconds and let it run tonight. I'll report back the results.
  • HI, I installed build 582 (after fighting with Vipre for a while). Changed the timeout to 60 seconds and no more timeouts.

    Thanks for the quick fix!
