Hi,

I have been using Acrosync successfully for years in order to mirror large directories of documents which are almost static (e.g. collections of scientific papers), from my main computers to my iOS devices. I have noticed time and again that the existence of a broken symlink in the source repository (most often a Linux remote server) would halt the execution of Acrosync on the iOS device with the message "symlink has no referent" (followed by the name of the broken symlink in the source directory).

This behaviour is different from the standard rsync tool: rsync would seamlessy synchronize broken symlinks from source to target, by default.

Today I am trying to synchronize a large directory of "current work" files, where broken symlinks have a useful meaning. I find myself stuck.

I use symlinks on my Unix machines to avoid the useless replication of data across different directories. For example, large data or postscript/PDF files in one directory could be symlinked to other directories needing the same file locally. Every now and then, in order to minimize storage occupancy, I compress a whole subdirectory to a .zip file and then remove the subdirectory, e.g. whenever I know I won't need that subdirectory very often. Whenever the removed subdirectory contains an original file that was symlinked elsewhere, this removal creates broken symlinks here and there. If, at some point, I need the original reference of the broken symlink, I simply look up the filename it used to point to, I follow its path, I find the compressed archive that holds that file, I decompress it, and can work on it again. Thus, for me, the existence of broken symlinks is a necessary trace to a compressed file which needs to be temporarily decompressed (and then perhaps removed again).

The behaviour of Acrosync on broken symlinks (abort its run) means I either refrain from using it, or I must delete all the broken symlinks in my directory, which would mean I would no longer be able to use whole subdirectories, because I would no longer know where the missing files can be found.

Is there any chance you could change (perhaps optionally?) the behaviour of Acrosync in presence of broken symlinks? I can envisage three options:

- just skip over the broken symlink without aborting (probably the easiest option)

- copy the symlink to the iOS device "as is" (I am assuming that the iOS filesystem has an idea of "symlinks")

- otherwise, create a small text file on the iOS device holding the name of the original file the source symlink points to.

Other than that, I'm grateful for this very useful tool!

Please let me know, and thanks for your work and your attention.

Yours,

Leo Liberti

Hi,

I just found Acrosync and tried to use the beta. However, I got stuck with entering (copy-paste) the SSH private key to the text area that opens once the "public key"-checkbox has been checked and I click "Remote directory" to enter the remote directory.

The error messages says:

"Authentication by public key failed: unable to extract public key from private key file: Unable to open private key file"

Which is kind of weird since the UI asked me to enter the private key content, not the its file name. So my question is, which format the private key should be? OpenSSH RSA key? Putty key format? Something else? I tried both Putty and OpenSSH format without success.

I am running Win 8.1 64 bit if that matters.

Jarno

Hi Acrosync folks (gchen?),

As a frequent user of rsync on linux, I was glad to see that there's a native rsync client for Windows. That, by itself, is an achievement, and I see that Acrosync has some other interesting features.

However, as a prospective customer, I suggest that your product gratuitously misses the mark by putting up several obstacles:

1. It can't be used like rsync. A large proportion of prospective customers already know how to use rsync, which means, from the command line, using the suite of options that rsyn offers. If Acrosync was usable from the command line, those customers would be able to adopt and use it immediately. You would hit a sweet spot if customers could quickly acertain that Acrosync would immediately solve their problem, at just the cost of the product, and zero hours of learning and uncertainty of how to make it work for the desired workflow.

Instead, Acrosync goes out of its way to not be operable like rsync, and throw into doubt whether it can be effectively used in a workflow that the rsync-savvy user already knows how to set up.

2. The GUI does not look like it would work for serious use. Apparently every rsync task one has every set up, and might want to use again, continues to appear as a tab. How is that going to work after configuring 20+ tasks? There seems to be no mechanism to just maintain a bunch of task specifications in a directory somewhere that one can open as needed. There's no way to copy and paste tasks.

3. The task specifications (profiles) are stored in the registry. GAAAAA! A thousand times "No!" on that idea. (a) I don't every want data like this jamming the registry. (b) I can't do anything (easily) with the registry that I can do trivially easily with files, such as copy them, edit them, version them, use them on another machine etc.

This is a key conceptual problem: The term "profile" suggests something that users would only ever have a few of, and they rarely change. But the thing being configured here is not of that type -- it's a task. A user might have dozens of them, only some of which are long-term, others are ad hoc, some need to be composed by scripts or programs, and so on. Forcing Acrosync's functions to be available only through the profile GUI severely underestimates the uses that customers could be putting it to (and inclined to pay for.

4. Acrosync has a scheduler, but if I want to schedule work on a Windows machine I already have a way to schedule work, and I want Acrosync to run subsidiary to that, which it is poorly suited to. Yes, I could set up profiles that have the other scheduler call Acrosync on those profiles. But those profiles then show up in the tabs, inviting disruption when Acrosync is used manually. And the tasks as known to the scheduler don't contain the details of what's copied where (just the name of a task), and nor can they be (easily) composed by programs or scripts.

5. It can't be used like rsync. Yes, I'm repeating this one, because the complaints of items 2, 3 and 4 are really side effects of the issue that Acrosync can't be entirely driven from the command line (plus additional parameter files, such as include/exclude lists, like rsync). If it could then there would be no problem with tabs being unable to scale with number of tasks, and task info being inconveniently stored in the registry.

In short, Acrosync perceptively identifies a hole in the market -- an rsync tool for Windows. But then misidentifies what that demand is about. It's not simply "let's have a tool on Windows that can move files around quickly". It's that we need a tool that fits into the rsync ecosystem with minimum hassle, an ecosystem in which rsync is run from scripts and cron jobs etc.

So, while I applaud your efforts to produce a native rsync client, I can't help feeling you're missing a significant proportion of the demand by omitting the command line interface.

Graham

Hi,

I have been using Acrosync to instantly sync data from a Windows 2016 server to a local QNAP NAS for a while now - no issues there. The data on the local NAS is then backed up daily to a remote Synology NAS using rsync tools on the NAS boxes.

I have now convinced a client to use the same set-up, but although the above set-up works well, I would really like to use Acrosync to transfer data to both the NAS devices at the same time. Is this possible?
