Hi Acrosync folks (gchen?),

As a frequent user of rsync on linux, I was glad to see that there's a native rsync client for Windows. That, by itself, is an achievement, and I see that Acrosync has some other interesting features.

However, as a prospective customer, I suggest that your product gratuitously misses the mark by putting up several obstacles:

1. It can't be used like rsync. A large proportion of prospective customers already know how to use rsync, which means, from the command line, using the suite of options that rsyn offers. If Acrosync was usable from the command line, those customers would be able to adopt and use it immediately. You would hit a sweet spot if customers could quickly acertain that Acrosync would immediately solve their problem, at just the cost of the product, and zero hours of learning and uncertainty of how to make it work for the desired workflow.

Instead, Acrosync goes out of its way to not be operable like rsync, and throw into doubt whether it can be effectively used in a workflow that the rsync-savvy user already knows how to set up.

2. The GUI does not look like it would work for serious use. Apparently every rsync task one has every set up, and might want to use again, continues to appear as a tab. How is that going to work after configuring 20+ tasks? There seems to be no mechanism to just maintain a bunch of task specifications in a directory somewhere that one can open as needed. There's no way to copy and paste tasks.

3. The task specifications (profiles) are stored in the registry. GAAAAA! A thousand times "No!" on that idea. (a) I don't every want data like this jamming the registry. (b) I can't do anything (easily) with the registry that I can do trivially easily with files, such as copy them, edit them, version them, use them on another machine etc.

This is a key conceptual problem: The term "profile" suggests something that users would only ever have a few of, and they rarely change. But the thing being configured here is not of that type -- it's a task. A user might have dozens of them, only some of which are long-term, others are ad hoc, some need to be composed by scripts or programs, and so on. Forcing Acrosync's functions to be available only through the profile GUI severely underestimates the uses that customers could be putting it to (and inclined to pay for.

4. Acrosync has a scheduler, but if I want to schedule work on a Windows machine I already have a way to schedule work, and I want Acrosync to run subsidiary to that, which it is poorly suited to. Yes, I could set up profiles that have the other scheduler call Acrosync on those profiles. But those profiles then show up in the tabs, inviting disruption when Acrosync is used manually. And the tasks as known to the scheduler don't contain the details of what's copied where (just the name of a task), and nor can they be (easily) composed by programs or scripts.

5. It can't be used like rsync. Yes, I'm repeating this one, because the complaints of items 2, 3 and 4 are really side effects of the issue that Acrosync can't be entirely driven from the command line (plus additional parameter files, such as include/exclude lists, like rsync). If it could then there would be no problem with tabs being unable to scale with number of tasks, and task info being inconveniently stored in the registry.

In short, Acrosync perceptively identifies a hole in the market -- an rsync tool for Windows. But then misidentifies what that demand is about. It's not simply "let's have a tool on Windows that can move files around quickly". It's that we need a tool that fits into the rsync ecosystem with minimum hassle, an ecosystem in which rsync is run from scripts and cron jobs etc.

So, while I applaud your efforts to produce a native rsync client, I can't help feeling you're missing a significant proportion of the demand by omitting the command line interface.

Graham

Hi,

I have been using Acrosync to instantly sync data from a Windows 2016 server to a local QNAP NAS for a while now - no issues there. The data on the local NAS is then backed up daily to a remote Synology NAS using rsync tools on the NAS boxes.

I have now convinced a client to use the same set-up, but although the above set-up works well, I would really like to use Acrosync to transfer data to both the NAS devices at the same time. Is this possible? If it is, what steps would I need to have in place for the remote connection to be secure.

I also have another client that wants to sync directly to a remote NAS rather than also have a local NAS to the server.

Any thoughts/help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Daz

Has there been any decisions to incorporate multi-threaded transfers per connection? I believe this had been discussed in the past while I can't find the thread anymore, I wanted to check to see if this will be supported? The challenge is files are getting bigger and bigger, a single threaded connection is not as effective in filling the pipe than pulling multi pieces at the same time. I realize it is not part of the original RFC but hoping this is on the horizon.

Hi there!

I'm running Acrosync or Windows since a while, and recently, I encounter a problem with a large file, bringing the sync process to an error halt.

It is an upload process over SSH to a QNAP NAS, syncing a couple of backups. Incremental snapshots, update in-place and shadow copy are deactivated.

The problem file has a size of 28,982,865,408 bytes. It is a full system backup, i.e. usually only small portions change and are transferred. The file is probably slowly growing over the months.

Since a while, the following error occurs:

2019/09/17 10:23:30 RSYNC_UPLOAD Uploading olk_System.tib
2019/09/17 11:26:15 RSYNC_ERROR rsync: lseek returned -1, not 97239969562624: Invalid argument (22)

It happens always after 1 hour and 3 minutes, and with the same (meaningless) seek address. Before it happens, I observe just the usual behavior on the server, i.e. that the checksums are calculated and that data are transferred for about this hour.

It seems that a seek request beyond of the file is issued, judging from the strange number.

Question: is it a problem created by Acrosync, or does is come from elsewhere, and if so, from where?

By coincidence, the problem occured when I updated from build 600 to 611, but I reverted to 600 for testing, and the problem persists.

Thanks for any help!

I'm having a problem using Acrosync in Auto Upload mode with a Visual Studio project. My goal is publish compiled assemblies to a local folder and then use Acrosync to upload the assemblies to a remote server. This works fine in manual upload mode. However, when I enable Auto Upload, Acryosync begins uploading while VS is still publishing. This creates a conflict, because Acrosync locks the directory prior to uploading and VS then gets an access denied error in the middle of the publishing process. This doesn't happen with small projects because the publish process finishes before Acrosync starts uploading. However, with a large project, containing a few hundred files, it fails every time.

I believe the solution would be to implement an optional delay in the Auto Upload. During that delay period, Acrosync would continue monitoring the directory and wait to see if files are still being written or not. Each time it sees additional files being written, it would reset the delay period. If the delay period expires with no additional activity, then Acrosync would start uploading.

Hi,

I'm still not getting anywhere on this topic:

Since the logfile doesn't contain any indication of what AcroSync is doing at the moment (a running job will only show up once a file has _finished_ transferring, not when a profile has _started_ execution), I used to run the AcroSync executable in parallel to the service in a user session (as a user, not as Admin). This way, I was at least able to see the rotating task icon and deduce that "something" must be going on.

However, this apparently causes logfiles to not being written correctly: The logfile on disk doesn't change, and the log window on the client (which had been running minimized-to-tray at the time) shows "access denied" messages for the logfile. Log rotation also didn't happen (error in the log window).

Can you please do something about this? As it stands now, neither the logfile (no progress indication) nor the GUI-executable (blocks writes to logfile from the service) can be used to monitor AcroSync execution.

Regards
